October 16

I arrived in Madrid this morning, and had the whole day to play around before my train left for Lisbon at 10:30 pm. I napped in the gardens around the capital to make up for my jet lag, and then went and walked around the Museo del Prado, which houses a bunch of paintings and sculptures by famous Spanish artisits. I took a few pictures of the painitings, but I couldn't use a flash so they came out a little blurry.

Here is the front of the Museo del Prado. It was big and artsy (go figure), including several aspiring artists painting both outside and inside the building.

Here is Goya's most famous painting, or the one I recognized the easiest. I really liked Goya's stuff; they had a ton of it so it was great to see the progression of his style. He ended up being my favorite artist of the day. This painting is a rendition of the exection of Spanish loyalists during the Napoleon's occupation of Madrid. It's blurry, but I took it mainly to remind myself of the actual painting.

This is an el Greco painting of a story in the Bible where people start speaking in tongues and flames appeared above their heads. I liked el Greco's style a lot as well, he always created great lighting of his characters. This picture is blurry and askew as well, but its the best I could do.

I had never heard of this artist before, but I liked this painting a lot. Its set somewhere in Spain but the jagged mountains reminded me of Colorado. The artist's last name was Haes.
