The eastern face of the Ngauruhoe. If it isn't obvious by now, the Tongariro Circuit loops around Mt. Ngauruhoe, eventually passing in between Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. The landscape changes below each side of the mountain: the western side is covered by brushy scrub; the northern side is a ridge line with huge craters and lakes; the eastern side looks like Mars, covered with red volcanic rock; and finally the southern side being bordered by forest, rivers, and waterfalls. I couldn't ask for much more in a 2 day hike.
